IB pedagogy in Scandinavian countries

While IB isn’t the dominant model in public education across Scandinavia, it’s certainly present and supported—especially in cities with international communities or where global education is prioritized.

Norway

  • Both state and private schools offer IB programmes, including the Diploma Programme (DP) at the upper secondary level.

  • The Norwegian IB Schools (NIBS) network supports collaboration among IB schools and helps align IB qualifications with national university admissions

Denmark

  • Denmark has 15 international upper secondary schools, many of which are publicly funded and offer the IB Diploma Programme.

  • These schools must meet national standards and provide access to higher education in Denmark.

Sweden

  • Sweden has a long history with the IB, with 47 IB World Schools offering one or more IB programmes.

  • While many are private, some public schools also offer the IB, particularly in urban areas

"As the community of IB schools continues to grow across the continuum, we still maintain the common belief that education can make the world a better place. Administrators, programme coordinators and teachers all spend time working together to help to promote the IB nationally, to meet and learn from each other, share best practice and share our varied perspectives" Norway IB Association
